Lasting Design Trends You’ll See in 2017

2017 is the year where casual and comfortable finally overtakes formal and fussy, whether that comes through in exciting colors, simplified floor plans, or giving previously overlooked spaces the love they deserve, we can all agree that these four trends are here to stay.

Staying on top of the newest home designs is tough. Especially since most blogs and magazines churn out articles and lists daily. We’re here to cut through the flash-in-the-pan fads and focus on movements with some staying power. Here are our four favorite design trends for 2017 and beyond.

SIMPLIFIED SPACES

With technological advancements and cultural shifts your grandparents could never dream of, you’d think home design would be getting more and more complicated, right? Wrong. “Simplify, simplify, simplify,” is the mantra of 2017. Why waste time, money, and space on rooms that receive little-to-no use? Formal living rooms have already gone out of fashion, and the formal dining room is on its way out, too. Instead, families are focusing more energy on open-concept, heavy-use and multi-use spaces that complement their busy lifestyles.

PERFECT PANTRIES

Even while home design is becoming simplified, many parts of life are not. We really see that happening in the kitchen. Nowadays there’s a small appliance for everything, food processors, waffle irons, panini presses, popcorn makers, and the list goes on. There is not enough counter space in the world to house all your gastronomic gadgets, which makes a great pantry necessary in the modern kitchen. The pantry has evolved from merely a place to keep food, to a culinary tool shed that will make cleanup and storage a breeze.

LUXURY LAUNDRY ROOMS

No longer a couple of machines hidden in the corner of the basement, in 2017, the humble laundry room is finally receiving its due. And for good reason, have you ever seen how many dirty clothes kids can produce? Much like the aforementioned tech-boom happening in the kitchen, laundry room storage now needs to accommodate ten types of detergents, fabric softeners, you name it. Plus steamers, irons, racks to air dry, and after all that you still need somewhere to do the folding. By creating a comfortable and inviting room, the headaches disappear and laundry starts to feel less and less like a chore, though we can’t promise you’ll ever really enjoy it.

ENERGETIC EXTERIORS

Remember when driving through a neighborhood was like swimming in a sea of beige? Well, this is the year we put our foot down and say, “no more!” Homeowners are finally moving away from safe waters and plunging headfirst into reds, blues, greens, yellows, and grays. People want to express their individuality and now realize their homes’ exteriors are the perfect place to start. To those pairing bold colors with interesting textures and materials, we salute you in your fight against the drab and humdrum.
