Be a Successful Homeowner
The first step to becoming a homeowner is owning a home. The next steps are a little less obvious. Here are three ways to make the most out of your new home.
MAINTAIN
If you haven’t already, familiarize yourself with your home. How is it constructed? How does the plumbing work? Where’s the fuse box? Start exploring your home until you know it like the back of your hand.
If you come across something you just don’t understand and can’t google, reach out for help. Ignoring problems, however minor, will cost money down the road.
Once you’re comfortable with your home start focusing on the smaller, everyday maintenance. Learn your garbage pick-up schedule. Make sure you have a lawnmower. Buy a snow shovel (even in August).
Your home is an investment, and proper maintenance will not only protect your investment, but increase your home’s value.
IMPROVE
When moving into a new home it can be tempting to spend a hefty chunk of your budget on things that will have a visible impact on the place. New floors. New paint. Landscaping.
It feels good to make a place your own. But, before you drown in carpet samples, think about prioritizing expenses that might not make the house look better, but will surely increase your home’s value.
Energy-efficiency is an area that won’t make an aesthetic impact, but will drive your bills down every single month. Make sure your appliances, furnace, and windows are up-to-date, and use the savings for future projects.
DIY
A great way to improve your home is by doing it yourself. Also, a great way to destroy your home is by doing it yourself.
We recommend learning basic repairs and maintenance specific to your home to cover the smaller issues, and call in the specialists when something a little more special comes about.
Attempting repairs you’re unfamiliar with is not only risky for your home, but dangerous, ESPECIALLY if you’re dealing with electricity. Leave that to the pros.
