Three Things to Remember When Designing Your Kitchen

By Paul Bielinski, CEO & VP

Whether you’re an amateur home cook or a certified gourmet, your kitchen is the heart of your home. So if you have the opportunity to make your kitchen better, you better make the most of it. Here are three important things to remember when designing your kitchen.

1. ROOM TO WORK

When you’re trying to get food on the table, the last thing you want to worry about is a lack of space. If you’re short on countertop, you’re going to find yourself doing dishes in the middle of a recipe while your chicken burns on the stove. The best solution? An oversized island.

An oversized island gives you ample, uninterrupted counter space for you to prep, cook, and clean. Plus, with an island, you don’t have overhead storage taking up space above your work area, which for a tall cook like me, is very necessary. Making sure you have the space to cook makes breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even just an afternoon snack that much easier.

2. STORAGE. STORAGE. STORAGE.

And an oversized island also solves another age-old problem in the kitchen … where do I put it all? Making sure you have enough storage space in your kitchen should be an absolute priority. An oversized island gives you extra storage space below for everything that won’t fit in your cabinets. In my kitchen I even have pull-out pots-and-pans drawers specifically for the more cumbersome tools that I need to access easily.

But cabinets and drawers aren’t the only storage options available to you. Pantries are also a great place to store the things you don’t necessarily need for every single meal. Blenders, food processors, and other countertop appliances that only take up space when not in use can find a home in your pantry.

3. FORM AND FUNCTION

Everyone wants a great-looking kitchen. But it needs to be functional too. It’s important to remember that when designing. Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice looks for efficiency. A backsplash is a great example. Not only does it look great and can be customized in tons of different ways to stand out or blend in how you like, but it also makes cleanup a breeze. With a tile backsplash you can easily wipe down and sanitize any spatters and spills that come from cooking.

The counters are another area where form and function can go hand in hand. Quartz has become incredibly popular as a material for your counters. It’s durable, beautiful, and easy to maintain.
