The Building Process
We get it. Sometimes building a home feels like walking up to a cliff and jumping off. So let’s make sure you’re wearing a parachute.
1. OVER-PLAN
The first and most important step to building your new home starts before even signing a contract: planning.
What are your goals? What are your inspirations? What’s your budget?
This is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make, so be absolutely sure you’re prepared. Reach out to local building experts. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Have a Plan A, a Plan B and a Plan C (go all the way to Plan Z if it helps).
2. FIND A TEAM YOU TRUST
Even with an unshakeable idea of what you want in mind, sometimes it helps to let the experts do what they do best. Working with a team you have faith in and listening to their advice will make your dream home that much easier to finish. Plus, with a builder you trust, the process becomes much easier for you and your family.
Here are some questions you can ask to make sure you find the right building partner:
Are they local?
Builders with strong community ties often have even stronger connections with area contractors and material suppliers. Beautiful homes are built on great relationships.
What’s their history?
The longer they’ve been around the better. Home building is a line of work where experience is king. You want a team who has seen it all, done it all, built it all.
Ask around.
The internet is your friend. It’s easier than ever to search out testimonials on social media, so take advantage! We know that building a new home is extremely personal, and it feels like no one else can understand, but millions (Billions? Trillions?) of people have gone through it, too. Don’t put all your faith into one Facebook comment, but don’t turn a blind eye to the wisdom of others.
3. START BUILDING
The moment you’ve been waiting for! With all the planning you’ve done and with a team you can trust, there’s no stopping you. But even the most airtight project can come upon a couple bumps in the road. It’s important to stay informed and make sure you’re involved in every decision that comes up. A good builder will gladly work with you every single step of the way.
