Cooking Up A Home
By Paul Bielinski
Building a home is just like cooking a satisfying meal, it all comes down to ingredients, technique, and organization.
INGREDIENTS
Lumber quality is to builders as egg quality is to a baker. Using free-range, organic eggs in a cake improve its taste and texture. Using high-quality lumber in a home makes it more durable, sturdy, and long-lasting. Simply put, a great finished product can only come from great ingredients.
TECHNIQUE
But the best ingredients won’t get you anywhere if you don’t have the proper knowledge. If you cook eggs on high heat, you’ll get something rubbery and tasteless, but if you cook eggs low and slow, the end result is perfect, silky, creamy scrambled eggs. In carpentry, if you cut corners you can end up with a home that isn’t level or square, guaranteeing future problems and headaches. Skillfully treating the lumber with precision results in a well-built home that will last.
ORGANIZATION
Want to cook something great? Start by getting organized. Do a little “
mise en place” (the French culinary phrase for the set up required before cooking) and make sure the prep work is complete before you start cooking. Without this forethought, the cooking process becomes hectic and chaotic. In home building, prep work means that all product and color selections are made, pricing is complete, plans are drawn, and permits and approvals are obtained. These things take time, but, just like in cooking, if they aren’t completed before construction begins the process will be chaotic, steps will be missed, and opportunities lost.
When it comes down to it, if you make sure you start with the best ingredients, have the correct technique, and stay organized, the end product will be superior, whether it’s a home or a meal.
