Preston 1812 featuring Sherwin-William's "Cavern Clay" Color of the Year

New Year means new trends. We took a look at different “colors of the year,” and picked some of our own. Here’s your palette inspiration for 2019.

Every year, major paint companies choose a color of the year, forecasting trends and styles for the upcoming twelve months. 2019 is a mixed-bag of warm colors, cool colors, and subtle neutrals.
Paint company Benjamin Moore named “Metropolitan” their color of the year. “Metropolitan” is a restrained, cool, neutral gray. It’s an adaptable color that is sure to “drown out the world’s cacophony,” according to Jessica Dailey from the New York Post.
Behr chose “Blueprint,” a relaxing blue-green, as their color of 2019. “Blueprint” is confident yet flexible, forward-thinking, and ready to inspire. It’s reminiscent of an architect’s blueprints, and will similarly bring designs to life.

Bielinski was ahead of the curve with Sherwin-Williams’ choice, “Cavern Clay.” We recently featured this color in our Preston 1812 model. “Cavern Clay” is a warm, earthy color that creates a relaxed, cozy feeling on the walls of the home office, yet becomes an invigorating statement on the coffered master bedroom ceiling.

We also use Wisconsin-made Hallman Lindsay paints in Bielinski homes. “Plume Grass,” a green-tinted neutral from the Eco-Chic collection, is their color of the year. “Plume Grass” has a timeless look with just enough of a tint to keep it fresh.
Other trending colors are “Living Coral”, a vibrant orangey-pink, by Pantone. Mustard yellow, muted pink, and blue-teal continue to be in trend. Crate & Barrel is featuring an updated jewel tone, plum, in bedding and bath accessories. And Z Gallerie is showcasing softer hues of pink, teal, and plum, as well.

When choosing colors for your home, start by developing a color scheme. Most paint manufacturers offer color palettes, which can be used as a starting guide. If you have a rug or piece of furniture you’re working around, choose colors that are similar or complementary. And always, always, paint a sample on the wall and view it at all times of day to make sure it looks good in every possible shade of light.

Incorporating trendy colors in your home can be easy. Start small. Cloth napkins or bathroom towels, a kitchen island or dining table centerpiece, an entry rug. This is a good way to know if you’re compatible with the color. If you want to take it further you can add soft finishes like sofa pillows and window panels, or you can even update a piece of furniture, like a bedroom nightstand.
Remember that trends aren’t rules that you need to follow to have a stylish home. Things like colors of the year are focused on your well-being. Whether it is a warm earthy tone, a cool neutral, or deep blue-green, pick and choose what colors best fit you and your lifestyle.
