How to do Mud Rooms

By Paul Bielinski

No matter the season, as long as the planet you live on is literally made of dirt, a mud room will always be a great addition to your home. A place to take off dusty cleats, soggy snow pants, and muddy galoshes. It’s hard to put much design thought into an area meant to get messy. So, here are some ideas for making the most of your mud room.

FURNISHING

There are a couple of options when it comes to decking out your mud room. Built-ins are elegant and useful, and will allow for easy access to gear and great organization options. But, if you want something a little less permanent, refurbished vintage furniture is a wonderful choice. A coat of paint or a new stain can breathe life into an old piece, and your local second hand store or antique shop will have plenty of storage options that will look great in your home. Make sure the piece you choose can stand a little beating, though. It’s the mud room, things might get dirty.

COLORING

Defining a color palette can really set the mood of a room. Since the mud room most likely will be an entrance to your home, you have to make sure the palette you choose is not only inviting, but works with the rest of your home. Mixing warms and cools are in right now, just ask our designer Rebecca Wardon.

CLEANING

Dedicating an area to cleaning is a must in a mud room. Installing a sink is always a great idea, and when it comes to sinks, the bigger the better. A large farmhouse sink will look great, and allow for cleaning dirty pets and children alike before they can attack the rest of your home. A sink will also come in handy when it’s time to mop the floors or scrub the walls. Remember to keep cleaning supplies on hand so you don’t have to track mud through the whole house to snag them!
