Make Your Home Represent Your Life
By Rebecca Wardon
One of my favorite things about designing is finding that personal connection between the space and the owner. Your home should represent your life. A great way to bring a personality into your style is by featuring pieces that hold some sort of importance for you.
During my senior year of college, I was moving into an unfurnished townhome. Being a poor college student, I looked around for inexpensive pieces and hand-me-downs. My ever-thoughtful grandpa found a dresser on the side of the road and picked it up with me in mind. It was nothing special, just a tall maple dresser. It survived move-in and move-out, and everything that happened in between.
When my boyfriend and I moved to an apartment we wanted to keep the dresser, but it needed a little face lift. We spent a Saturday sanding it and painting it charcoal grey, plus we added new square marble drawer pulls. It was an easy piece to incorporate into our home, as I have a very eclectic style.
It flowed perfectly with the white comforter, the headboard made of two white antique doors, and the black industrial lamps.
But the most important thing is that it means something to me. When I look at it I think of my grandparents and how they’re always thinking about their grandchildren. I think about my college days. I think about the fun Saturday my boyfriend and I had learning how to refurbish furniture and now we can’t wait to do it again.
