How to Style Series: Modern Farmhouse
by Rebecca Wardon, Interior Design Manager
When I begin to select products in a home, I take a lot of inspiration from the exterior design. Certain looks just work with certain home styles. In this series of blogs, I’ll be explaining how I would go about product selection for different styles of homes. This time we’re going to focus on the Modern Farmhouse.
BALANCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL & MODERN
A Modern Farmhouse gives you a sense of freedom. By finding the sweet spot between traditional and modern, it allows you to choose what parts of each world you want to embrace. Lots of customers, especially younger home buyers, choose Modern Farmhouse plans because they want to bring in traditional aspects without the home feeling dated or out of style. Modern Farmhouses bring new life to traditional design and makes everything feel fresh.
MY MODERN FARMHOUSE CHOICES: INSIDE AND OUT
For a Modern Farmhouse, we want to find that balance between traditional and contemporary, and white is the answer. A white home is a classic choice that won’t conflict with the modern touches we’re going to add.
The exterior is always a great place to start styling.

Then, I would use natural tones to soften up the look. A wood stain on the porch posts to match the garage and front door will keep the exterior from looking too stark.

Inside, once again, we’ll embrace the balance of light and dark colors.
-
Using white counters and a white backsplash in the kitchen, but go contemporary with two-tone cabinets, white on the upper, wood stain on the lower.
-
We can also bring in more modern points of interest with black or gold hardware.
-
The floors would be a lighter blonde wood or luxury vinyl plank to keep things bright and airy.
-
If I was styling a master bath in a Modern Farmhouse, I would use painted or patterned white tile to bring depth. But overall keep the look clean with white cabinets and limited colors.

The Modern Farmhouse is a style that allows you to play around, so by keeping your foundational style choices fairly simple, you’ll have more of that freedom to bring in unexpected decor and furnishings.
