Is Your Home Ready For Spring?
Ahh, spring. The time of year when every Wisconsonite simultaneously kicks the winter blues to the curb. Though one thing looms heavy on the minds of local homeowners: spring cleaning. This time of year the seasonal to-do list can seem so daunting you don’t even know where to begin. Here are some easy projects to help get the ball rolling.
IT IS EASY BEING GREEN
Sorry, Kermit, but sometimes being green is a lot easier than our favorite felt frog might make it seem. As we move into the warmer months, there are a few easy jobs around the house that will help save the planet (and save some money, too).
For starters, the changing of the seasons is a perfect time to change your lightbulbs. Replace old bulbs with new, energy-efficient bulbs. You’ll thank us when it comes time to pay the electric bill.
There’s plenty of other ways to stay cool and green that are unique to your own life. For instance, if you have a gas fireplace in your house, leaving the pilot light on through the spring and summer is just burning money. Refer to your fireplace owner’s manual on how to easily and safely turn off, and turn on, the pilot light.
DON’T FORGET THE OUTSIDE
One side of spring cleaning is easily overlooked during the monsoon of Pine-Sol and Windex: the outside.
Snow and ice can really do a number on every aspect of a property. Right off the bat, take a walk around your lot to see if anywhere needs a little more TLC than usual. Here are some areas to focus on: walkways, patios, and driveways, as well as siding and gutters.
If you’ve never used a power washer, you’ve never truly lived. If you don’t have one readily available they can be easily rented, and their cleaning abilities are second-to-none. A medium-duty pressure washer will be perfect for taking winter grime off of siding, fences, walkways, driveways, decks, and patios.
And with spring showers incoming it’s important to make sure your gutters are operating correctly. Snowfall and ice build-up can hinder proper flow, and readjustments might be in order.
These small fixes are easily ignored, but your house will be looking and functioning better with just a little bit of time and elbow grease.
DECORATE FOR THE WEATHER
Simple design changes might be just what the doctor ordered to truly kick off the spring season.
Heavy materials perfect for winter will look out of place in the spring, and changing dark, cozy colors to lighter palettes and patterns will not only help to welcome the warmer climate, but also help to get into a vernal state of mind. The same can be said for adding plants and flowers on your windowsills and tables.
Even something as simple as transitioning scents can change the entire feel of your home. Move away from earthy aromas, like cloves or sandalwood, and towards floral, fruity, and fresh scents.
This time of natural change is always a perfect time for fixing, switching, and cleaning. Do it right in 2017, and keep your property looking as good as the first day you walked in.
