Making the Most of Your Basement
By Paul Bielinski
Gone are the days of dark and musty basements. Turn the zeroth floor of your home into the number one space for anything you want. A great basement has a lot of potential, so here are some ideas of how you can make the most of it.
SOMETHING USEFUL
Are you a bit of a pragmatist? Then why not use your basement for something practical. Sure there’s nothing sexy about extra storage space, but it sure would make your life easier. A home office could also be useful when it comes time to pay bills, file taxes, or handle paperwork. You won’t be getting many points for glamour, but turning your basement into a practical space that improves your life is hard to say no to.
SOMETHING ENTERTAINING
Always having guests over? Then maybe some extra entertaining space is what you need. A place to watch the game on Sunday, host your book club, or just chat over some drinks at the bar. An entertaining space in the basement is a great idea. And if anyone ever pops in you’ll be ready to host at the drop of a hat. Add a space for something interactive like a pool table and suddenly you’ll be everyone’s favorite host.
SOMETHING YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED
Has there been a room you’ve always wanted but have never had to space for? A basement is the perfect place to set up your dream room, whatever it may be. Looking for a craft room to work on your art? Basement. A home library to store your book collection? Basement. A man cave? A she den? Put it in the basement! It’s a perfect way to incorporate a space you’ve always desired that never did fit into the plan.

ALL OF THE ABOVE
Remember, your basement can be a little of this, a little of that. Sure your home office is down there, but right outside the door is that top-of-the-line entertainment system to watch your favorite films (we recommend blocking line of sight from your desk to the TV, or you’ll never get anything done). The point is that you can accomplish a number of things with your basement, especially with the right builder.
