Fall in Love with the Season
By Rebecca Wardon, Interior Design Manager
Seasons change and so do seasonal styles. Here are some quick tips on easily updating the look of your home to match the look outside.
THE LITTLE THINGS
Decorating your home for the season doesn’t have to be expensive, labor-intensive, or time-consuming. Sometimes it’s just changing a couple of details that makes a world of difference.
-
Change your indoor foliage to something more seasonally appropriate with gourds.
-
Put out heavier blankets and textured pillows.
-
Follow the trees’ lead and bring in some autumnal color with caramel, pumpkin orange, mustard yellow, and dark accents.
-
Sometimes even just decorating your porch with a timely wreath or some gorgeous mums is enough to bring the fall feeling to your home.
This season I am seeing a lot of pumpkins, feathers, pampas grass, dried flowers, wicker and rattan baskets or furniture, natural wood, amber bottles, chevron patterns, and plaid. The point is, just a few pieces can really change your style without much hassle. Check out our Pinterest board for more fall décor inspiration.
PLAN AHEAD
If you’re the type of person who desires seasonal design to be a big part of your home’s look, the easiest way to keep things simple is to start simple. No one wants to be painting their walls or reupholstering their sofa four times a year, so choose neutral colors and styles that can act as a blank canvas for smaller, seasonal decorations to play off of.
If keeping things neutral isn’t what you want, then keep your seasonal decorations confined to a certain area of the home. I have certain spots in my home that are the only areas that change with the season while everything else remains the same.
Whatever your style, it’s important to have a bit of a plan, otherwise you’ll find yourself spending too much time and too much money every few months.
MY PERSONAL TASTE
For me, fall means mums and pumpkins on the front porch and the deck. I’m also looking for a classic little red wagon to pair with hay bales and dried corn stalks to really sell the fall look. And the fall season isn’t just a visual thing in my home. I love creating the smell of the season with candles and diffusers to really create a cohesive experience that goes beyond decorations.
