5 Details That Count
Building a new home? Don’t forget about these easily overlooked details.
1. OUTLETS
A great way to make sure you have enough outlets in convenient locations in your new home is to create a furniture layout right on top of your floor plan. By getting an idea of where you’ll be placing your couches, chairs, and tables you can avoid unsightly exposed cords and power strips.
To play it on the even safer side, create multiple furniture layouts to account for any redecorating you might do down the road.
2. LIGHT SWITCHES
Light switches were invented to make life easier. They can do that, if you plan ahead. In an open concept floor plan, for example, you might want a centralized area to control multiple parts of the house, as well as other light switches placed throughout the floor plan.
Do a mental walkthrough of your home-to-be to decide exactly where switches need to go to be accessible and handy.
3. WINDOWS
We’re not saying you’re going to forget to put windows in your new home. We’re saying that windows should be purposefully placed.
Study your lot and figure out the best vantages. Enlarge windows in those areas to let in natural light and fresh air. Pay attention to trees and future construction possibilities surrounding your home that may block your light or invade your privacy.
4. DOORS
Consider what each door will be used for, as well as the size of the furnishings you’ll be moving through it. Doors aren’t one-size-fits-all. If you have someone in a wheelchair or walker in your family, opt for a wider door frame.
Talk to your builder about common door sizes to make life easier if you ever have to repair or replace a door down the line.
5. STORAGE
Most folks will make sure they have enough storage in their new home, but what’s really important is having the right storage. In some cases, a bank of drawers may serve a
purpose better than a cabinet door would.
Consider pots and pans storage, pull-out wastebaskets, spice drawers, tray dividers, towel racks, lazy susans and roll-out shelving for all your specific needs.
