What to Know About Windows

By Steve Bielinski, COO

Windows are a focal point for exterior aesthetics. So they deserve all the attention that you might put into other choices — like backsplashes and floorboards. It’s time to talk about what goes into getting the most out of your windows.

Whether you have a frame preference or even a window pane preference, there are a variety of options for you to choose from. In my “All About Windows” blog, I talked about those options. But, the decision making doesn’t stop there.

Style

Before you pick out the frame or pane, consider what style fits your wants and needs.

The most common style we install in our homes are single-hung windows. This is a standard window where the top pane stays in place, while the moveable sash can slide up to open — letting the fresh air in.

Your other option is to skip the sliding panes altogether with casement windows. These use a small crank to open outward from the home. Casement windows work well along other styles especially if they are part of a larger window installment.

It all comes down to personal preference.

A Little Flair

After finding the style, function, and form, it’s time to focus on the aesthetic. What do you want your windows to look like?

Window grids are a great way to add some curb appeal to your home, while offering an opportunity for self-expression. With a variety of grid options, you can really add a personal touch.

And, when it comes to design, don’t forget about color! Beige and white windows have long been the traditional choices. They’re still great color options for anyone who likes a softer, brighter color palette. But, they aren’t your only options.

In recent years, we’ve seen a trend toward deep-colored windows — black and dark gray — becoming the new go-to. The darkened palette can give your home a more modern feel in a simple way. So, really consider the look you’d like.
