The Ever-Evolving Garage

When my father and uncle started building together in 1960, they built detached garages. Now, over 60 years later, we’re still building garages, they just look a lot different. Here’s a quick look into how we’ve evolved the garage over the years.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Those detached garages that Frank and Harry were building in the ‘60s are a far cry from the garages you’ll see today. But for a long time, they were the norm. You can even drive past the first Bielinski model home in Waukesha and see it for yourself!

As the economy grew, and families were able to afford multiple cars, garages grew as well. Soon, two-car garages were seen on almost every new build. These garages were traditionally 20’x20’, just enough space for two cars and a lawnmower or snowblower.

TODAY’S GARAGES

But times continued to change and 20’x20’ in 2021 doesn’t cut it anymore. We’ve got a lot of stuff these days – gardening equipment, tools, toys, you name it. Now, our minimum size is generally 22’x22’.

And that’s just the beginning. We also often add “bumps,” two to four feet of extra space dedicated just for storage. These two-and-a-half-car garages are perfect for families that need to store sports equipment, bikes, and everything else that we acquire throughout life.

Two-and-a-half not enough? A third car stall is another option you can choose to get even more storage out of your garage. Whether you use that third car stall for an actual third car is up to you. In my home, we use the third car stall to store our deck furniture in the winter.

Customers are investing more and more into their garages. We see heated garages, built-in shelving, and tool benches. We even often add in extra electrical for those planning to be working in the garage. The garage has changed a lot over the years. And evolving our garage options keeps us ahead of the curve. Now almost every single RediHome? we build has a garage with a third car stall option.
