It’s that time of year again. The snow is melting, new grass is ready to sprout, and the last bits of winter salt are stuck in your soles. With the season of transformation upon us, it’s time to welcome change by prepping your property.
1. Start Off Small
Sometimes with our busy schedules, we forget the routine checkups we need to do in our homes. Daylight Saving Time is a great reminder to take a look at your smoke detector, test it, and be sure to put in a new battery to make sure your home is safe and secure.
Along with safety, it’s important to check your lightbulbs. If there are any flickers or burnt out bulbs, be sure to replace them. Consider, even, some eco-friendly alternatives. Not only will the planet thank you, but your energy bill will too.
After months of heating your home, be sure to scope out your furnace. Dirty filters should be replaced every 3 months. Swap any old filters with a clean one, so the furnace is functioning optimally and safe to use for the months to come.
2. Indoor Upkeep
Beat the heat by testing your air conditioning system. Turn it on, let it run its course, and keep your eyes open for any issues. Testing early allows you to catch any problems and schedule necessary repairs before air conditioning is a necessity.
To round out your indoor spring cleaning routine, give a little extra love to your mudroom and entryways. Sweep up the lingering salt. Scrub off any sludge that was tracked in. Nothing says “spring” like a spotlessly clean home with no remnants of the harsh winter months.
This applies to the garage as well. Taking care of your concrete is something often overlooked. Sweep out your garage floor and maybe even spray it down to rid the area of salt that has fallen from your car or was dragged in by your shoes.
3. Don’t Neglect the Exterior
Every year you should take a walk around your home and inspect the exterior caulking and siding and trim. If there is any loose or missing caulk on your home, be sure to replace it. Then, follow up with repainting these caulk repairs to ensure the area is weather-tight.
If you see paint peeling, that is a tell-tale sign that there is a water infiltration issue that needs some attention.
While you’re surveying your home, be sure to clean out your gutters as well. Clear them of winter-season build up and be sure they are draining away from the home. If there is any damage, be sure to replace them. It’s best to be prepared for those springtime showers.
4. Laying the Groundwork
Finish your spring cleaning by caring for your yard. Scope out the base of your home for any settling issues. The harsh weather can create pockets in the soil that need to be filled. This helps deter water infiltration into your home. Fill any pockets with top soil. And, make sure it’s a positive pitch away from the home (sending water away from your home).
Top off your chores by pruning any bushes or greenery, and enjoy the soon-to-bloom yard you’ve just helped prosper.
