2022 Exterior Home Trends to Keep an Eye On

Design is a pendulum. Styles come and go. Things become popular, evolve, folks get sick of it, and they disappear, only to reappear in some way in the future. In exterior home design this year, we’re going to be seeing a lot of evolution, though not much outright change. So let’s take a look back at last year’s trends to see how they’ve changed over the course of a long (or was it really short?) year.

COLORS

Neighborhoods in the 2000s were a sea of beige.

The 2010s, a sea of gray.

Now, in the 2020s, as the pendulum of design continues to swing, bolder exterior colors continue to gain popularity.

Just like in 2021, dark blues, dark grays, reds, even blacks have become a normal sight on the outside of a home. But the real hottest color on the block in 2022 is white. Even just five years ago, white was passé, but with the reemergence of the farmhouse style in modern farmhouse and Americana homes, white has become one of the most commonly requested colors we see. And trim has gone the total opposite. Where it used to always be white, white, white, we’re now seeing a lot of black. This also goes hand in hand with the modern farmhouse and Americana styles, but they’re not the only cases. Even on homes with dark siding, we’re seeing black trim.

GARAGE DOORS

The statement garage door was another of 2021’s trends that we’re going to see evolve in 2022. We used to hide the garage door. We would match the color with the trim to make it disappear into the home. Now we make it sing.

Woodgrains will continue to be the trending look in 2022, with much lighter and darker hues gaining popularity over traditional finishes. We’re definitely going to keep an eye on this trend, it will be interesting to see just how far people are willing to take it.

HOME STYLES

This might come as no surprise if you’ve made it this far in the blog, but the modern farmhouse / Americana are the styles of 2022. We’ve already mentioned their influence on everything exterior from siding to trim. And the other styles we saw make a surge in 2021, transitional and modern prairie, will continue to grow in popularity.Follow our blogs throughout the year to keep an eye on the evolution of these trends, or check out some exterior styles yourself by visiting a Bielinski Homes Neighborhood.
